All your recipients will greatly appreciate the latest pictures of Johnny or Sally and the speed at which they can open and view these master pieces!

Upcoming Holidays will be full of family and friends, the latest and greatest in digital cameras and folks sharing their favorite digital pictures.  So whether you’re sending digital pictures or on the receiving end of huge digital picture attachments, size matters.  Today’s digital cameras are capable of taking pictures at very high resolution with very large file sizes.  Sending or receiving these can be much like forcing an elephant though a straw or worse yet; many email providers will block or limit large attachments.  Say your email provider limits your messages to a maximum of 2 megabytes, today’s camera can easily take one single picture that will exceed that limit.

There is a simple solution and it’s free and easy to use!  This solution requires Windows XP (in later tutorials, I will cover other operating systems and tools).

Image Resizer

This PowerToy enables you to re-size one or many image files with a right-click.

Microsoft Notes: We take great care to ensure that PowerToys work as they should, but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys. PowerToys are for Windows XP only and will not work with Windows Vista.

Download and Install Microsoft’s PowerToys for Windows XP.

(This web page lists a number of powertoys for Windows XP so please feel free to explore these and what they do.)
For our tutorial, we will only focus on the Image Resizer powertoy.

  • Scroll down the right hand side of the page and locate Image Resizer
  • Click the link to download the ImageResizer.exe
  • Follow the prompts and installation instructions, clicking through till your installation is complete.

To use the Image Resizer PowerToy, simply Right Click on any image or set of images and select Resize Pictures.

Resize Picture

Select your resize option – Medium (800×600) is sufficient and very viewable for email attachments.

Resize Pictures Options

Once you click OK, Image Resizer will create re-sized copies of your selected digital images noting the file name now includes the option you chose (i.e. (Medium)).

That’s all there is to it!  Make sure to select the re-sized copies of your images when sending your email.  All your recipients will greatly appreciate not only the latest pictures of Johnny or Sally, but also the ease and speed at which they can open and view these master pieces!
